What ingredients don’t you use in your products and why?
Ethanol is a generally safe substance to use for cosmetic or personal care products such as nail polish removers but when it comes to skin care, alcohol can be irritating. SofiesSecret Makeup Remover Cloths do not contain any alcohol based ingredients.
Animal Derived Stearates
Stearates are normally derived from animal byproducts. SofiesSecret is a vegan brand and we do not endorse the use of any animal byproducts in our Makeup Remover Cloths or any other products.
In order to reduce the impact of our environmental footprint, we do not endorse the use of any petrochemical products that undergo fossil fuel processes and thus reducing CO2 emissions.
Soap based products are great on its own, but when certain properties are derived from soap it may cause the skin to become dry, itchy, flaky and may even cause a rash. You won’t find any soap derived ingredients with SofiesSecret products.
Sulphates (or sulfates) contain harsh surfactants that strip the hair and skin of valuable moisture. SofiesSecret products are meant to moisturize and hydrate your skin not deprive it, which is why we avoid sulphate (sulfate) based ingredients.
Parabens are used as a preservative and can be found in cosmetic and personal care products. SofiesSecret Makeup Remover cloths don’t contain parabens due to the fact that it has been linked to numerous health concerns such as allergies (Sensitizing, Irritating, Contact Dermatitis and Rosacea), cancer, and increased aging of skin when exposed to the sun.
Perfume (Parfum) & Fragrances
SofiesSecret does not use Perfume & Fragrances due to the fact that they are known as a major health hazard and cause Allergies and immunotoxicity. Fragrances & Perfumes in Personal Care & Beauty products are mixed with undisclosed (various) scent chemicals and ingredients such as diethyl phthalate. Fragrances & Perfumes have been associated with allergies, dermatitis, respiratory distress and are potentially harmful on the reproductive system. The European Union Ecolabel has expressed its concern with products containing Fragrances & Perfumes as Environmentally dangerous material. Waste and runoff from Fragrances & Perfumes can cause Wildlife & Ecosystem damage.
Phenoxyethanol is an antibacterial preservative. The FDA warned that Phenoxyethanol can cause shut down of the central nervous system, vomiting and contact dermatitis (in high concentrations). MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) reports Phenoxyethanol as a harmful ingredient when swallowed, inhaled or absorbed through the skin and can cause reproductive damage. This information is based on 100% concentration. However, even at 1% (or lower) Phenoxyethanol is still considered Toxic and can cause damage to the nervous system. Japan has restrictions on the concentration limit for use with cosmetics and Europe has classified it as an irritant and allergen. Although it is relatively okay at very small concentrations, Phenoxyethanol should still be avoided.
Didecyldimonium Chloride or Quaternium – 12 is a quaternary ammonium salt. It has antistatic, hair conditioning agents, emulsifying & surfactant properties. However, Didecyldimonium Chloride has been proven to be an Allergenic and Toxic ingredient in personal care and cosmetic products. When Didecyldimonium Chloride is absorbed by the skin it has toxic effects which damages the immune and respiratory system. When used around the mouth, the risk is minimized, but when it comes in contact with the lips or mouth, the risk is increased drastically. In addition, Didecyldimonium Chloride has been suspected to an environmental toxin.
BIS-PEG/PPG-16/16 PEG/PPG-16/16 DIMETHICONE is a Derivative of Dimethicone which is a silicone based polymer used to lubricate and condition hair/skin. However, it is chained with alkixylate (16 moles), ethylene oxide (16 moles), propylene oxide (16 moles) and end-blocked with ethylene oxide (16 moles) and propylene oxide (16 moles). BIS-PEG/PPG-16/16 PEG/PPG-16/16 DIMETHICONE functions as a skin conditioning agent, surfactant and emulsifying agent but the danger that lies within this ingredient is what it is treated with. Ethylene Oxide is a carcinogen (high increase risk of cancer), Reproductive organ toxicant, irritant (eyes, lung and skin), allergen, respiratory toxicant, kidney toxicant, and has been banned (and found unsafe in cosmetics and personal care products) in Canada. Ethylene Oxide produces a byproduct called 1.4 Dioxane which has similar properties to Ethylene Oxide. 1,4 Dioxane is a carcinogen, irritant, allergen and toxicant with the same side effects as Ethylene Oxide. These harmful chemicals (Ethylene Oxide and 1,4 Dioxane) are byproducts of a process called ethoxylation which is used to reduce the risk of skin irritation for petroleum based ingredients such as Dimethicone – a hybrid product that is partly produced from petrochemical properties.
DMDM hydantoin is a Formaldehyde Releaser preservative. People who are exposed to this ingredient may develop a formaldehyde allergy or an allergy to the ingredient itself. It has been confirmed through lab tests that DMDM hydantoin is a known human immune and skin toxicant, allergen and irritant. In some cases, it has even been labeled as a cancer causing ingredient. Approximately 20% of cosmetics and personal care products in the U.S contain a formaldehyde releaser and thus increasing the frequency of contact allergies. DMDM hydantoin can be found in products such as shampoo, hair conditioners, hair gels, liquid lubricant and other skin care products.
MEA (Monoethanolamine), DEA (Diethanolamine), & TEA (Triethanolamine)
MEA, DEA, & TEA are Ethanolamine which are ammonia compounds used in cosmetics as emulsifiers or foaming agents; however, these ingredients are Potential Carcinogens, have been proven the possible increase risk of cancer (especially with prolonged use). MEA, DEA & TEA reduce the surface tension between substances (water & oils) so that they can be blended together easier and also used as a pH regulator. Common products that may contain Ethanolamine ingredients are: eyeliners, mascara, eye shadows, blush, makeup bases, foundations, fragrances, hair care products, hair dyes, shaving products and even sunscreen.
Methylisothiazolinone (MIT) & Methylchloroisothiazolinone (MCI)
Methylisothiazolinone & Methylchloroisothiazolinone are both very strong preservatives and have been linked to a vast amount of health concerns but are still being used in cosmetics and personal care products today. SofiesSecret Makeup Remover cloths don’t contain these preservatives because they have been found to be highly sensitizing, irritating and allergenic. Limited research has shown that MIT & MCI preservatives can be linked as a cancer causing substance. In Europe and Canada, the use of MIT preservatives have been banned and found unsafe to use in cosmetic and personal care products. MCI is under heavy restriction from the Japanese and European government (limitation on the amount of concentration used in solutions). The Canadian government has found it completely unsafe for use in cosmetic and personal care products.
